People & Places

The people who make it personal

A winemaker in Willow Creek. A familiar face on the Eureka docks. Ice cream from a dairy in Loleta. A historic house a short walk from the Arcata Plaza.

Every visit I plan leans on people here who do what they do with care. These are some of the hosts, makers and photographers I love introducing guests to, and the places where your days might unfold.

Makers & hosts

The winemaker and his family in the barrel room at Miles Garrett Wines

Willow Creek

Miles Garrett Wines

A family winery inland along the Trinity River country, making small lots of Malbec, Merlot and Pinot Noir from grapes grown on site, with labels that look like nothing else on the shelf.

Why I introduce guests: it isn’t a tasting room. It’s a working winery, with fog on the ridges, a wood-fired oven by the vines and the winemaker pouring.

Eureka

CeCe of CeCe’s Seafood

A familiar face on the Eureka waterfront, among the working boats of Humboldt Bay.

Why I introduce guests: the best way to understand a harbor town is through the people who still make their living from the water.

Jersey Scoops

Loleta · Eel River Valley

Jersey Scoops

A small ice cream shop on Loleta’s main street, run by Thomas and Cody Nicholson Stratton of Foggy Bottoms Boys Farm. The ice cream is made from the milk of the family dairy’s Jersey cows, with soft serve, scoops and flavors that change with the season.

Why I introduce guests: it’s farm to cone in the truest sense, and a sweet stop on a slow drive through the dairy country south of Eureka toward Ferndale.
